a hog roast in the middle of edinburgh’s old town

Vegetarians, avert your eyes. Edinburgh’s Grassmarket is known for being a bustling gathering space full of boutique shops and eateries. Sure there are plenty of pubs, coffee shops and places to sample Scotland’s famous meat pies. But turning onto Victoria Street, a winding uphill cobblestone road, we were literally stopped in our tracks by a full-sized pig enticing us from inside the window. Gazing upwards, a simple word on the window, “OINK” in great pink lettering beckoned us to come in to check out the menu. Not that there really is one. It’s a sandwich shop like no other, and the only choice is… you guessed it, pork. Served from the actual hog, you select one of two kinds of chutney as your topping. We chose the sage and onion with a bit of chili relish, along with a choice of a £.25 piece of crispy crackling (did they really have to ask?) OINK is a unique (and incredibly delicious) establishment in the middle of Edinburgh’s Old Town. But just be sure to get there early – after the pig’s finished, the shop closes.
